The character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

When we learn about the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we often focus on what he taught us to believe and how he taught us to worship Allah.

But there was another part of his life that people experienced directly: his character.

Aisha رضي الله عنها was asked about the character of the Prophet ﷺ, and she gave a remarkable answer:

“His character was the Qur’an.”

Sahih Muslim, 746

The Qur’an was not simply something he recited. Its teachings were visible in the way he treated people, forgave others, showed mercy and gave to those around him.

He Gave Without Fear of Poverty

One of the clearest examples of the Prophet's ﷺ character was his generosity.

Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him for sheep. The Prophet ﷺ gave him all the sheep between the two mountains.

The man returned to his people and said:

“O my people, embrace Islam, for Muhammad gives so generously as if he has no fear of poverty.”

Sahih Muslim, 2312a

Imagine the generosity behind this.

The Prophet ﷺ could have given the man a small portion. Instead, he gave him a huge flock.

His generosity was so great that the man was amazed by it.

And there is something even more beautiful in the narration. Anas رضي الله عنه explained that the man initially embraced Islam because of what he received, but Islam eventually became more beloved to him than the entire world and everything in it.

A gift opened his heart to something far greater than the gift itself.

He Was Gentle With People

Allah says:

“It is by mercy from Allah that you were gentle with them. And if you had been rude and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from around you.”

Qur’an 3:159

The Prophet ﷺ had strength, but his strength did not make him harsh.

He was gentle with people. He listened to them. He taught them patiently and treated people with dignity.

This is something we can bring into our own lives.

Sometimes we think being harsh will make people listen to us. But a gentle word can reach someone in a way that anger never could.

He Was Not Foul Mouthed

The Prophet ﷺ was also careful with his speech.

Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنهما said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was neither obscene nor vulgar, and he used to say: ‘The best among you are the best in character.’”

Sahih al Bukhari, 6035

This is especially relevant in our own time.

It is easy to become comfortable with rude jokes, insults and harsh language because we hear them everywhere.

But the Muslim should be different.

Our character should be seen in the words we choose, especially when we are angry.

His Character Was Seen at Home

Good character is not only how we behave with guests or people we want to impress.

It is also how we behave with the people closest to us.

Aisha رضي الله عنها was asked what the Prophet ﷺ would do in his home. She said:

“He used to keep himself busy serving his family.”

Sahih al Bukhari, 676

The people closest to us see parts of our character that nobody else sees.

Being patient with family, helping at home, listening when someone needs us and showing kindness when we are tired are all opportunities to follow the example of the Prophet ﷺ.

Character Is Part of Islam

The Prophet ﷺ did not separate good character from faith.

He taught us that how we treat people matters.

A person may pray, fast and perform many acts of worship, but Islam also asks us to become people of good character.

That means being generous when we can give, patient when we are tested, gentle when we have the opportunity to be harsh and forgiving when we have the ability to hold a grudge.

These qualities were not simply things the Prophet ﷺ told others to have.

They were visible in his own life.

A Sunnah We Can Practise Every Day

We do not need to wait for a major opportunity to follow the character of the Prophet ﷺ.

We can start with the people around us.

Give something without expecting anything back. Speak kindly when you could have been harsh. Help someone without announcing it. Forgive a mistake. Be patient with your family.

Even a small act of generosity can mean more to someone than we realise.

The Prophet ﷺ showed us that good character is not only found in extraordinary moments. It is built through the ordinary choices we make every day.

A Better Way to Follow the Prophet ﷺ

To love the Prophet ﷺ is to want to become more like him.

Not only in the things we say, but in the way we treat people.

His generosity teaches us to give. His mercy teaches us to be gentle. His patience teaches us to control ourselves. His character teaches us that Islam should be visible in the way we deal with others.

The next time we have an opportunity to choose between kindness and harshness, generosity and selfishness, patience and anger, we can ask ourselves:

What would it look like to follow the character of the Prophet ﷺ here?

May Allah beautify our character, make us generous and gentle, help us follow the example of His beloved Messenger ﷺ and gather us with him in Jannah. Ameen.
